Successful Gotek boot!

Hi folks,

Things have moved on a lot since Kluder's experiments with the HxC floppy emulator in the form of Keir Fraser's 'flash floppy' firmware which loads on the current crop of cheap Gotek drive emulators and provides support for a lot of 8-bit machines as well as native ADF support for Amigas.

Inspired by Asshen's post (and chatting a lot with him on Facebook) I set about trying to get a 'brain and a Gotek to talk to one another. After a lot of experimentation, coffee and swearing I got a Newbrain to boot from a disk image, at which point I may have let out a small maniacal laugh.

Aside from a Gotek loaded with FlashFloppy firmware (current is 0.9.20) the key to getting this working was one Keir's other utilities - disk-analyse - which converts between multiple image types.  The sequence needed went along the lines of:

Use Dave Dunfield's ImageDisk to create .IMD files of some Newbrain disks.
Download, compile and install Disk-Utilities onto a handy Linux host, in my case my floppy imaging PC.
Use disk-analyse to convert the .IMD images into .HFE
Copy the .HFE files onto the USB stick used for the Gotek
Select image and boot your Newbrain!

One thing I haven't got working properly is disk swapping. When you change image on the Gotek you have to force the 'brain to re-read it by giving it a fake drive select command ('A0:' works), but aside from that it works nicely.

Hopefully this is useful for someone!
